SALEM – The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has extended the lethal removal permit for the Horseshoe Wolf Pack in Umatilla County until Oct. 28. It was set to expire today (Friday), but another incident of a calf lost to wolf depredation occurred on Sept. 23.
The permit allows the producers and their agents to remove up to two wolves in the pasture where the recent depredations have occurred. Trapping may be added to the tools that are authorized.
The livestock producer has used human presence to discourage wolf depredation. That includes frequent checks on the cattle, camping with the cattle for more than 40 nights, hazing wolves in the pasture including when a wolf was actively pursuing a cow. There are no wolf attractants on the property.
ODFW can assist in killing the wolves, but at this time no such plans have been announced by the agency. The pasture is located near Meacham.
