Legislators say, ‘Give me Liberty’

OLYMPIA – It’s back. Once again the Washington Legislature will consider a measure that would split the state in half, creating the state of Liberty. House Bill 1239 is not the first time the concept has been introduced. It would remove the eastern portion of the state to create the nation’s 51st state.
“The western boundary of Liberty follows the crest of the Cascade mountains and the western borders of Okanogan, Chelan, Kittitas, Yakima, and Klickitat counties, “ the legislation reads. “The eastern, norther, and southern borders of Liberty are the existing state borders.”
The bill is sponsored by four representatives. Two are from the Spokane area, one is from Moses Lake, and the fourth is from Granite Falls in Snohomish County.
The measure would establish 15 transition committees dealing with issues like executive, legislative, judicial, and local government functions. The Liberty movement already has a website. It can be found at https://libertystate.org/.
The bill’s passage is considered to be difficult, according to political observers. It would then have to be approved by Congress before it could go into effect.
