UPDATE: Tias is in Multnomah County Jail

UPDATE 1/20/23: CTUIR reports that Tias is back in custody. Details have not yet been released.

Records show that he is now in custody in Multnomah County Jail. The roster states he was brought into the facility Thursday just after 4 p.m. by U.S. marshals.

Tias had pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was awaiting sentencing set for April 10 when he fled.

MISSION – The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation reports Tom Redhawk Tias, 22, escaped on Monday from the Medicine Wheel Recovery Services facility in St. Helens and is believed to be heading to the Pendleton area. Tias had entered a guilty plea for manslaughter and was due to be sentenced on April 10.

CTUIR issued a release stating that Tias reportedly assaulted a family member at the facility and that shortly after the altercation, he removed his monitoring device and absconded. A federal warrant has been issued for his arrest. The Umatilla Tribal Police Department is coordinating the search efforts with state, local, and federal law enforcement.

Officers are also asking for the public’s help. UTPD urges the public not to interact with Tias. Anyone who has knowledge of his whereabouts is asked to call dispatch at 541-278-0550 with any information.

Tias pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter on Dec. 14, 2022. He was charged with repeatedly striking a Tribal member who had an active Tribal protection order against Tias. The incident occurred on Jan. 26, 2021. The victim died due to blunt force trauma to the head and neck.

Tias was arrested on a charge of voluntary manslaughter on Feb. 10, 2021, and a federal grand jury indicted him on the same charge on March 16, 2021. He faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years supervised release.
