JOHN DAY – John Day City Councilor Chris Labhart has resigned, his announcement came during last week’s meeting.
Labhart made his statement during councilors comments towards the end of the meeting. He cited frustration with councilors being more concerned with previous actions taken by past councils rather than moving forward.
“Let us move forward and not blame others for what the city faces now, our job is to look to the future,” said Labhart.
Labhart also expressed concern with the current number of councilors who are appointed rather than elected.
“This gives me concern as to why members who are elected by the citizens have either resigned or have been recalled,” he said. “We need a city council that has some stability and that citizens have confidence in.”
Despite his frustrations with the recent council, he did express gratitude for his time with the city.
“During my tenor I’ve seen the city accomplish many things that have benefited both the citizens of John Day and the surrounding communities,” Labhart said. “I’ve had the opportunity to work with outstanding employees, staff, and city councils.
Labhart stated his resignation was effective immediately, his term expired in 2028.
