LA GRANDE — La Grande High’s swimming coach has been honored with a prestigious state award, after steering the team through a wave of victories this past season.
Cheyenne Maszk has been named 4A-1A Coach of the Year for swimming from the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association.
Maszk coached the Tigers through a successful regular season this past winter, before diving into the state championships, where the girls took second overall and the boys claimed third.
Several La Grande swimmers also brought home individual medals.
Coach Maszk sent Elkhorn Media Group this statement after finding out about her honor:
I couldn’t believe it. I had to double check it was correct with my AD. I’m incredibly honored. Coaching is honestly one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. It brings me so much joy, and I celebrate those kids like they are my own. They always continue to push and strive, and it is so impressive to watch. As a coach, I just want to bring out their best, whether that is in competition or in the skills they are going to take with them through life. I really enjoy getting to know each athlete. They are all unique, talented, and genuine. I’m truly honored to be part of their journey.
