LA GRANDE – Christmas is around the corner, and the spirit of giving is already out in force in Eastern Oregon. The 17th annual La Grande Shop with a Cop is coming up Thursday, December 11 at 11:00 A.M.
For those unfamiliar, Shop with a Cop is a special program present in cities across the nation that provides a unique opportunity for kids to shop for their families and spend time with their local law enforcement officers. The goal is to give youth the chance to give their families something nice for Christmas, and provide a memorable, positive experience with their local officers.
Every year, 15 students from across the La Grande School district are selected and paired with officers from the La Grande Police Department, Union County Sheriff’s Office, and Oregon State Police for the Christmas shopping experience of a lifetime. During Shop with a Cop, the youth-officer duos spend part of the day in Walmart Christmas shopping for the kids’ families, all the while a small army of volunteers wrap gifts and prepare lunch for everyone.
The entire program, including all gifts, is paid for each year through the generous contributions of local businesses and community members. For anyone interested in donating this year, donations can be made out to the La Grande Police Department at any time leading up to Shop with a Cop. For questions or more information about the program, contact Lt. Jason Hays with the LGPD at 541-963-1017
Again, La Grande’s 2025 shop with a cop is scheduled for Thursday, December 11 at 11:00 A.M.
