LA GRANDE – The City of La Grande has one of the most robust and dedicated urban forestry programs in the state of Oregon, earning a Tree City USA certification for no less than 36 consecutive years. Helping in part to perpetuate this great green legacy has been the Urban Forestry Department’s series of annual community tree planting days.
For anyone looking to get their hands dirty for Arbor Month and help keep the city all the greener, La Grande’s annual spring community tree planting day is coming up on April 25. The event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with volunteers meeting at the Parks Department parking lot (2402 Cedar Street) near Pioneer Park.
Parks and Rec remind volunteers to dress appropriately and bring a water bottle. Extra gloves will be provided, along with needed tools. After a demonstration on proper tree planting, participants will split into groups to plant trees at different locations around town. Volunteers will need to carpool to different locations before meeting back at Pioneer Park around noon.
Anyone interested is asked to register by April 24, which can be done here. Questions can be addressed to the city’s Urban Forestry Division at 541-962-0514 or trees@cityoflagrande.org
