SALEM – Joanna A. Marikos has been selected to serve as circuit judge in Oregon’s Sixth Judicial District, which includes Umatilla and Morrow counties. She fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Christopher Brauer and the appointment goes into effect immediately.
Marikos graduated after her junior year at Hermiston High School with an adult high school diploma from Blue Mountain Community College. She earned a bachelor’s of science degree from Gonzaga University in Spokane and her law degree at Willamette University College of Law. She is currently serving as referee pro tem for the district’s civil department and also serves as treatment court judge.
Before that, she was a private practice attorney who worked on court-appointed juvenile cases, handled estate planning, and tackled Social Security disability cases. She also worked as paralegal program chair at Broadview University in Meridian, Idaho. As a solo practitioner, her work has included criminal defense, real estate, landlord/tenant issues, and family law.
“Joanna Marikos has already earned a reputation as a fair and compassionate judge in her current role as a referee for Oregon’s Sixth Judicial District,” Kotek stated in a prepared release. “Her judicial experience, broad legal expertise, and deep local roots make her an idea choice to serve the people of Umatilla and Morrow counties from the bench.”
