Key races to watch in 2024 WA primary election

OLYMPIA – Voters in Washington are receiving and casting their 2024 primary election ballots. The top two vote getters for each office will move on to the general election.
Some of the key races to watch include the governor, as a total of 28 candidates are vying to replace outgoing Gov. Jay Inslee.
Ten people are challenging incumbent Democrat Sen. Maria Cantwell to serve in Congress.
A total of seven people are in the race to become the next commissioner of public lands. Whoever is elected in November replaces Hilary Franz, who dropped out of the governor’s race and chose to run for the 6th Congressional District.
All three of the Republican lawmakers from Washington’s 16th Legislative District face challengers. Kari Isaacson is challenging incumbent Sen. Perry Dozier of Waitsburg. Linda Gunshefski is challenging incumbent Rep. Mark Klicker of Walla Walla, and Craig R. Woodard is challenging Rep. Skyler Rude of Walla Walla. All three challengers are Democrats.
Ballots must be returned to a county drop box or voting center by 8 p.m. Aug. 6, or, if mailed using the postage-paid envelope included with every ballot, postmarked by Aug. 6 to be accepted. The U.S. Postal Service recommends mailing ballots a week before election day.
