MILTON-FREEWATER – The Milton-Freewater Police Department took a juvenile boy into protective custody Saturday on a felony charge of first-degree criminal mischief. He’s suspected of applying graffiti to the Visual Eyes building, 230 N. Columbia St., at 2:24 a.m. on Monday, March 10. Video footage obtained from the business allowed officers to positively identify the suspect.

Chief Joe Shurtz said following standard procedures in juvenile cases involving felony charges, the Umatilla County Juvenile Department was notified. Officers were instructed to issue a criminal citation to the suspect instead of lodging him at a juvenile detention center. The officers issued the citation and released the suspect to his parents. Shurtz said further information about the suspect will not be released due to his age.

Milton-Freewater has recently seen an uptick in graffiti. Shurtz said while these case can be extremely difficult to investigate, this case was solved due to the quality of the video.

This case will now be forwarded to the juvenile department for review and prosecution.
