SALEM – The Oregon Judicial Department is reporting that once again Oregonians are being targeted with fraudulent calls, texts, or emails regarding jury service. The communications threaten people with fines, prosecution, or jail time for failing to comply with jury service. It appears that most of the threats are occurring in the Willamette Valley.
Sixth Circuit Court Trial Court Administrator Roy Blaine said they’ve not received reports of any such scams in Umatilla or Morrow counties, but wants people to be prepared. The callers pressure their victims to give out confidential data such as bank account information, credit card numbers, date of birth, or Social Security numbers.
OJD says there are several things a potential victim should NOT do. Don’t provide a payment or any personal information. Don’t reply directly to the text or email. Don’t click on any links or open any attachments. Scammers have grown talented in making their cons look like they are coming from a legitimate source.
If possible, get the caller’s name and number. Then hang up and contact the local court to report the attempt. Blaine can be reached at 541-278-0341 (Pendleton), 541-676-5690 (Heppner), or 541-667-3020 (Hermiston). If the scam involves a federal court, call the FBI at 503-224-4181.
