BURNS/HINES, OREGON-Judge Rob Raschio swore in Maranda Calkins as the new Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Harney Program Manager for the ‘CASA of Eastern Oregon’ Program.
“CASA volunteers are critical in ensuring every child’s right to grow up with dignity in a safe environment that meets the child’s best interest.” Judge Raschio stated. “Every volunteer makes our children safer.”
“The court is very happy to have Ms. Calkins as our new community outreach point.” Judge Raschio said. “Citizens who are interested in serving as a CASA, an extremely important role in our juvenile justice system, should get in contact with Ms. Calkins as soon as they can.”
“If you are interested in volunteering for the CASA program, please contact Maranda Calkins at harney@casaeo.org or (541) 620-8824.” Judge Raschio requested of the public. “We need more volunteers from all walks of life who wish to ensure children are safe and families are receiving the necessary services from the Department of Human Service to be reunified whenever possible in our community. All you need is a commitment to family and to children! CASA will provide all the training and continued support necessary for you to see your commitment through.”
“Growing up in a home full of abuse, I often felt unheard and forgotten. As an adult I have strived to create a life that promotes love, encouragement, and safety.” Calkins said. “I was first introduced to the system when we became resource parents 5 years ago and could clearly see where our system could benefit from better communication. We currently have a high rate of children in care and over half of them do not have an advocate speaking on their behalf. These children need to be heard, to know they are not alone. CASA of Eastern Oregon strives to give these children the ability to not only be heard but to be defended in their darkest times. Volunteers are the most important part of this program and our children would benefit greatly from adding new additions to the team. I will be working diligently on advocating for the voices unheard and encouraging those around me as we work together in making a difference for these children. I would love for you to join me!”
