JOSEPH — Joseph Charter School is expanding the career possibilities connected to its fire science classes, helping students explore opportunities beyond firefighting.
Olan Fulfer, Joseph’ Charter School’s Fire Science Teacher, said fire science students take part in demanding classroom and fieldwork, as well as community-service projects such as stacking wood and assisting with fire-safety work. The class helps students develop practical skills and workplace habits, but only some students ultimately pursue firefighting.
That has encouraged Olan to look for other pathways that may fit students’ goals. Healthcare has emerged as one area of interest: 18 students have signed up for a new basic EMT program through Idaho Medical Academy, and students are also exploring healthcare internships and additional training. Olan said the school is working with partners to help students understand what different careers involve and how they might continue their education.
The approach extends beyond healthcare. Students have visited workplaces such as a bronze foundry, explored welding and other trades, and taken part in hands-on activities with local businesses. Olan said those experiences can help students identify what motivates them—even when they decide a particular path isn’t right for them.
For Olan, success means helping students find a direction and giving them the support to pursue it. He encourages students to try challenging opportunities, learn from setbacks and keep exploring their strengths.
