Jordan Valley weed management co-op highlights the Canada Thistle

JORDAN VALLEY — The Canada Thistle is a local weed highlighted this month by the Jordan Valley Cooperative Weed Management Area (JV CWMA). The co-op states, “Canada thistle spreads by both seed and creeping roots, allowing it to form dense colonies.”

Officials say the weed is a problem because it reduces forage production in rangelands and crowds out desirable vegetation. It is difficult to control and spreads aggressively underground.

JV CWMA says the best control for Canada Thistles is to treat them with “…certain herbicides during early spring or fall at the rosette stage.”

The weed can be identified by its purple flower heads and spiny leaves. Look for dense patches connected by underground roots.

The Jordan Valley Cooperative Weed Management Area suggests not letting small patches become large infestations.
