John Day Fossil Beds specimens underwent 3-D modeling

KIMBERLY, OR – John Day Fossil Beds National Monument’s Paleontology Program Manager and Museum Curator Dr. Nicholas Famoso was recently on KJDY’s Coffee Time. He explained to listeners that there have been several individuals and groups that have swung by the park for the purpose of furthering research:
“One of the big groups that we just had come through was the Western Science Center from just outside of Los Angeles, in the Inland Empire part of California.
They do a lot of three-dimensional modeling using a technique called photogrammetry. So, you take a bunch of photographs, and then you stick it into a program and it creates a three-dimensional model.”
Famoso said the group modeled fossils from the Clarno and Mascall units in the park. The models will be on display at both the John Day Fossil Beds as well as a facility in California.
