John Day: Cooler temps and more snow for January

 According to preliminary data received by NOAA’s National Weather Service in Pendleton Oregon, temperatures at John Day averaged near normal during the month of December.

       The average temperature was 32.3 degrees which was 0.2 degrees above normal. High Temperatures averaged 40.8 degrees, which was 0.9 degrees below normal. The highest was 63 degrees on the 2nd. Low temperatures averaged 23.8 degrees, which was 1.4 degrees above normal. The lowest was 4 degrees, on the 30th.

       There were 29 days with the low temperature below 32 degrees. There were 5 days when the high temperature stayed below 32 degrees.

       Precipitation totaled 0.92 inches during December, which was 0.32 inches below normal. Measurable precipitation -at least .01 inch- was received on 12 days with the heaviest, 0.20 inches reported on the 7th.

       Precipitation in 2021 totaled 7.18 inches, which is 5.99 inches below normal. Since October, the water year precipitation at John Day has been 3.18 inches, which is 0.40 inches below normal.

       Snowfall totaled 7.7 inches with at least 1 inch of snow reported on 2 days. The heaviest snowfall was 4.5 inches reported on the 30th. The greatest depth of snow on the ground was 6 inches on the 31st.

       The outlook for January from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center calls for below normal temperatures and above normal precipitation. Normal highs for John Day during January are 42.5 degrees and normal lows are 23.5 degrees. The 30 year normal precipitation is 0.98 inches.
