John Day-The John Day City Council met Tuesday night with the majority of the meeting focused on seating an interim city council member. The process lasted two hours with public comment becoming heated at times. However, none of the five nominees secured a majority vote. Shannon Adair and John Melling received three votes each with council members Katrina Randless, Elliott Shy and Dave Holland voting for Adair and Mayor Heather Rookstool and Council members Sherri Renninger and Ron Phillips voting for Melling. Nominees Brian Hubbard, Chris Labhart and Glenn Palmer failed to receive votes. When asked, Mayor Rookstool reported to Elkhorn Media Group that she would contact the City Attorney for legal advice on how to move forward. Rookstool also noted that the city attorney has already found that the city charter does not offer a special election as an option. The seat being filled is the position vacated by Rookstool after she was elected Mayor last November.
