KENNEWICK – Kennewick Police K9 Officer  Ivan made his second apprehension of a suspect in just a few days Monday afternoon. This time Ivan, whose handler is Officer Chris Whitney, sniffed out Jose Monzon, 22, who was hiding in a closet under a pile of clothes.

The incident began when KPD officers were dispatched to a report of a man attempting to enter a home in the 400 block of South Rainier Street. The man was unable to get inside and fled on foot to the area of South Olympia Street and West Fifth Avenue. The suspect continued to flee on foot through an apartment complex and officers lost their visual of him.

A resident in the area saw the man enter an apartment and alerted a police officer. KPD then locate the residents of that apartment and determined they were not inside and did not know the man. They gave police permission to clear the apartment and remove the suspect.

After multiple warnings from police failed to receive an answer, Ivan was sent to search and was quickly successful. Monzon was transported to a local hospital for medical assistance and was booked into Benton County Jail on a 72-hour hold for one count of residential burglary and one count of attempted residential burglary. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 509-628-0333 and refer to case numbers 21-13530 and 21-13547.
