PENDLETON – Excessive heat warnings and watches blanket the region at least until Friday evening according to the National Weather Service in Pendleton. Today’s high temperature is expected to be 108 degrees in Hermiston, 105 in Walla Walla, and 104 in Pendleton.
Forecasters say they really are not sure yet when the excessive heat will end. Even though the watch and warning expire Friday evening, the weekend is also expected to be hot. Saturday the high will be 106 in Hermiston and 105 in Walla Walla and Pendleton.
Pacific Power reports it began hardening its grid last week to prevent substation overloading during the heatwave. The utility adds that it is taking additional precautions in high-risk areas to reduce the risk of wildfires. That includes stepping up patrols of power lines.
The utility urges its customers to also take steps to avoid problems with the electrical grid. It asks that people keep their curtains and blinds closed during the day, open windows during the cool of the night, and operate clothes dryers and dishwashers at night as well. Those with air conditioners are asked to set their thermostats at 78 degrees and higher if they are not at home.
