LA GRANDE – Recently, Timber Ridge Apartments, a La Grande low-income apartment complex managed by the Northeast Oregon Housing Authority, has come under some community scrutiny regarding its current applicants. Rumor states that between 60 to 80 percent of Timber Ridge applicants are from outside the Housing Authority’s jurisdiction (Union, Baker, Grant, and Wallowa Counties). Some rumors even state that the majority of these out of district applicants were deliberately selected from metropolitan and urban areas in Western Oregon.
The Northeast Oregon Housing Authority states that these rumors are completely false. According to Executive Director Sarah Parker, application to Timber Ridge operates on a first come first serve basis. In addition, of the 242 current applicants, only 23 are outside of the Housing Authority’s jurisdiction, with only three of these being from the Portland Metropolitan Area. The remaining twenty applicants are still from Eastern Oregon, simply being from counties outside the jurisdiction. As stated by Parker, “It’s for our community, it’s for our community members.”
