ISLAND CITY, OR – (Information provided by the City of Island City)  At this time, the City of Island City will not be implementing a firework ban. We believe that our community members will be responsible and will take all necessary precautions to celebrate our country’s Independence safely and responsibly.  We applaud the desire to celebrate the patriotism of our great nation.

State-wide and regionally, extremely dry, hot conditions are causing a lot of cities to press “pause” on their 4thof July celebrations. There are a few fireworks displays still scheduled for our area, and we encourage our residents to view those that are conducted by professionals.

We have been working with the La Grande Rural Fire Protection District for guidance when it comes to residents setting off legal fireworks.  We would request the following:

  • NEVER use illegal fireworks
  • ALWAYS supervise children under the age of 18 using fireworks.  Parents, YOU are responsible should the misuse of a firework result in a fire or fire injury caused by ANY firework
  • ALWAYS have an adult light firework and keep matches and lighters secure
  • ALWAYS light fireworks in gravel or asphalted areas, away from combustible vegetation or structures
  • ALWAYS have a fire extinguisher / water hose / bucket of water available
  • ALWAYS light only one firework at a time
  • NEVER throw a firework once it has been lit
  • NEVER re-light a “dud” firework
  • AWAYS soak used fireworks in a bucket of water overnight before disposing of spent fireworks

As local weather conditions are expected to remain hot and dry, please use extreme caution while using fireworks.

Lighting and watching fireworks have become a large part of celebrating Independence Day, and Island City wants to keep this tradition in place.  Please keep all these precautions in mind as you plan your celebration.  Have a fun and safe 4th of July.
