Investigation Continues Into Halfway Motor Vehicle Fatality

HALFWAY – (Release from the Baker County Sheriff’s Office) UPDATE: Baker County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) and Oregon State Police (OSP) are continuing their investigation into a motor vehicle crash that left one juvenile deceased and critically injured an adult female and juvenile.

On January 30, 2023, at approximately 5:55 p.m., law enforcement and emergency medical services were dispatched to 166 W. Record Street in Halfway to a report of a motor vehicle crash with multiple injured parties.

During the investigation, it was determined that a 1999 Ford bus was parked outside Pine Valley Church waiting for a group of children to board. After the group boarded the bus, the vehicle accelerated unexpectedly. As the driver attempted to gain control of the vehicle, it struck an adult female and two juvenile pedestrians. One juvenile was pronounced deceased at the scene. The adult female and juvenile were transported by Life Flight.

The investigation will continue throughout the next several days as law enforcement personnel from BCSO and OSP interview involved parties and conduct an accident reconstruction. Counseling services have been made available by New Directions Northwest to those who were affected by this incident. Our sincerest condolences go out to the family and friends of the victims as well as law enforcement and emergency medical personnel that responded to the scene.

PREVIOUS:

 On January 30, 2023, at approximately 5:55 p.m., Baker County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch received a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a youth group bus in Halfway, Oregon. Initial reports indicated that there were multiple injured parties.

Law enforcement from Baker County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police responded to the scene along with Halfway Ambulance, Eagle Valley Ambulance and Life Flight.  As a result of the crash, a minor child suffered fatal injuries.

The investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by BCSO, OSP and the District Attorney’s Office. Additional details will be released when available.
