LA GRANDE — (Release from the La Grande Police Department) At approximately 2:53 PM this afternoon, La Grande Police Department (LGPD) officers were dispatched to a residence located at 405 S. 12th Street in response to a report of an individual in his backyard who had discharged a .22 caliber rifle into the ground and was threatening self-harm. The individual remained armed and in close proximity to the firearm for most of the incident.
LGPD officers, assisted by Union County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Oregon State Police troopers, quickly contained the area to ensure public safety. South 12th Street was temporarily closed between Taurus Avenue and Linda Lane. A command post was established on-site, and officers were able to initiate communication with the individual.
At 4:49 PM, the 71-year-old male was safely taken into custody without further incident. He was subsequently transported to Grande Ronde Hospital for evaluation. Fortunately, no injuries were sustained during the incident.
LGPD worked alongside deputies from the Union County Sheriff’s Office, troopers from the Oregon State Police, and a crisis counselor from the Center for Human Development to resolve the situation peacefully. Additionally, neighbors, family, and friends provided vital support during the incident.
The investigation is ongoing, and while criminal charges of Unlawful Use of a Weapon may be pending, the individual’s immediate mental health needs are being addressed as a first step. Public safety remains a top priority throughout this process.
The La Grande Police Department is grateful for the support of our partner agencies, the community, and those who aided in bringing this incident to a peaceful resolution.
