PENDLETON – Pendleton’s oldest park is undergoing projects that will improve the area that hosts the ice rink in the winter and pickleball and basketball in the summer. In addition there is work being done on the small playground and the men’s restroom.

The biggest project is at the scene of the former location of the city swimming pool. When it closed in the 1960s a concrete slab was poured on top of it. That slab is now deteriorating and ground-penetrating radar has shown that a void now exists under the pad.

Engineers determined the best course of action is to excavate and rebuild the pad. The Pendleton Parks and Recreation Department reports that the work will also allow the city to upgrade the pickleball courts to feature built-in nets. The Pendleton Ice Sports Booster Association is also fundraising to replace score boards and equipment for the ice rink as part of the project.

The playground border will be upgraded. Crews will also replace small equipment that had to be removed. The project would also address the ADA stall of the men’s bathroom that was vandalized, and includes the complete stripping of the anti-graffiti paint, repainting the interior, and staining the exterior wood surfaces.
