NYSSA — Officers and commanders from Boise and Caldwell joined together for a special run to honor the life of fallen Nyssa Police officer, Corporal Joe Johnson.

The Caldwell Police Department organized what it called the Platoon Run. Officers ran from Idaho into Oregon and through Nyssa to remember Johnson on the anniversary of his death.

Cpl. Johnson was shot and killed by Rene Castro during a traffic stop on April 15, 2023.

Castro was sentenced to life in prison earlier this month with no chance of parole for 30 years.

Once the Idaho officers arrived at the Nyssa Police Department, they were greeted by other members of the Nyssa Police and Corporal Johnson’s family. They then presented Nyssa Police Department Chief Ballou with a flag in remembrance of Corporal Johnson.

Later on Monday, a softball fundraiser was held between Nyssa Police and Nyssa Fire at JJ’s Park, which was named in Johnson’s honor.
