HERMISTON – A child who was injured in the wreck outside Hermiston on Umatilla River Road on Christmas Day has died. West Park Elementary School is preparing to help students and staff with the grieving process as classes resume Wednesday.

“When things like this happen, everyone reacts differently, including sadness, fear, and anger,” the district stated in a release.

The district has set up a safe room staffed by members of the crisis flight team to help both the students and staff. The room is a space where people can talk with a support professional or just have time alone to think about the impact of the tragedy.

HSD officials asked for parents and the community in general to keep an eye out for both students and staff who may be struggling with the news. Counselors are available.

Three vehicles were involved in the crash just after 5 p.m. on Dec. 25. Nine people were taken to the hospital, seven of whom were seriously injured and two of whom were under the age of 10.
