BAKER COUNTY – Having a wildfire in your area can be stressful but understanding how to identify what a fire is going when a smoke plume is in sight can help you understand what is happening. Here are a few pieces of information regarding smoke that were released by officials with the Elbow Creek Fire recently.
If you see a fire with smoke that is white it often means that materials burnings are releasing moisture or water vapor. This indicates that the fire is just starting to consume material.
If you see black smoke this indicates heavy fuels in the area that are not being fully consumed by the fire. The darker the smoke the more unpredictable the fire is.
If the smoke is grey, this shows that the fire is slowing down and running our of materials to burn.
