SALEM – A housing bill that will free up land to develop housing has passed the Senate. Part of a package of bills proposed by Gov. Tina Kotek, it would allow cities to expand their urban growth boundaries if the goal is to create more housing.

Although a project of the Democrats, the bills earned support from Republicans. For example, it will allow the UGB expansion that is vital to allow housing develop on Pendleton’s east side on the so-called Rees-Goad property.

The bills now go for consideration before the House, and Rep. Vikki Breese-Iverson (R-Prineville) is looking forward to it. She is the vice chair of the housing and homelessness committee and has been a real estate agent for more than 20 years.

“I appreciate the ability to examine our land-use system as part of this process and look forward to continued conversations about land use, UGB expansions, and preserving the rural-urban interface,” she said.
