Homicide investigation underway in Ontario

ONTARIO – (Release from the Malheur County Sheriff) On January 16, 2024 at approximately 3:40 pm the Malheur County Dispatch Center received a single 911 call reporting shots fired at 1187 NW 22 nd Ave. Ontario. This area is commonly referred to as “The Flats”. The Flats are private property but have become a transient camp with a number of people coming and going.

A Malheur County Sheriff’s Deputy arrived on scene at 3:46 pm and found a male with apparent gunshot wounds. After the scene was made safe medics came in at 3:49pm. Daniel Mendoza Olvera 40, a resident of the camp died from his injuries.

The Malheur County Major Crimes Team was activated including members from Malheur County Sheriff’s Office, the High Desert Drug Task Force, Ontario Police and the Oregon State Police. This is an active and on-going homicide investigation with no known threats to the general public.
