OREGON – It wouldn’t be Christmas time without Christmas lights. Unfortunately, the little bright bulbs can be something of a fire hazard if improperly set up or powered. To help avoid Christmas being ruined by an electrical fire, OTEC and other touchstone Energy Cooperatives offer the following safety recommendations:

  • Only use lights that are approved by a professional testing organization.
  • Inspect all lights, cords, and electrical sockets for signs of fraying, cracking, or other damage.
  • Unless approved by the light’s instructions, avoid connecting more than three strings of lights together at a time.
  • Do not rout extension cords under rugs or near walkways.
  • If using holiday lights on a real Christmas tree, ensure it is watered every day and that no lights are in direct contact with the tree branches.
  • If using an artificial tree, inspect the UL label to ensure it is certified as fire resistant.
  • If installing lights outdoors, use only lights, power strips, and other equipment that have been approved for outdoor usage.
  • When decorating outdoors, keep all electrical connections off the ground and ensure all wiring is clear of downspouts, railings, and metal siding.
  • To avoid wind damage, ensure holiday lights are secured tightly to buildings, trees, or other surfaces.
  • Keep in mind that metal staples and nails, while good at securing lights, can damage insulation and wiring.
  • Do not run Christmas lights overnight or when not home. Use a timer if necessary to help prevent fires.
