LA GRANDE — You don’t hear the word dynasty used too much in the world of competitive singing. But that’s the case when it comes to the La Grande High School a capella choir.
The Tigers are looking to secure their fifth-straight 4A title on Friday, May 3 at the OSAA State Choir Championships, being held at Oregon State University in Corvallis.
La Grande’s streak dates back to 2018 when it tied Molalla for first place at the state championships. The Tigers then went on to win outright titles in 2019, 2022 and 2023.
The state choir championships were canceled in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
La Grande has now won eight state titles in the past 15 years, claiming the title in 2009, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2023, all under the direction of Kevin and Kascie Durfee.
This is the second time La Grande choir has gone on a championship streak. The Tigers previously achieved this feat in 2001, 2002, and 2003 under the leadership of Michael Frasier.
La Grande performs Friday at 11:40 at OSU. 4A awards will be handed out at 2:00pm.
