HERMISTON – The Hermiston City Council is holding two work sessions to review community proposals for the future use of the Carnegie Library. The first one is today at 6 p.m. and the second will be at the same time on May 11. Both of those meetings are prior to regular city council meetings at 7 p.m.

The building in the heart of downtown Hermiston at the end of Festival Street is positioned to serve as a community hub. The Oregon Legislature has already approved $1 million to support redevelopment efforts.

Four local groups will make presentations on their vision for the building. The Hermiston Amateur Radio Club is proposing a community radio program focused on STEM education, youth engagement, and emergency communication resiliency. The Creative Arts Club envisions a community arts and creative learning center with programming in art, music, and intergenerational activities. The Hermiston Museum wants to establish a cultural and historical hub preserving local heritage through exhibits and educational experiences. The Learning and Discovery Center proposes a hands-on learning facility with interactive exhibits, classrooms, and labs designed for children and families.

Additional proposals will continue to be accepted during the review period. Both work sessions will be held in council chambers of Hermiston City Hall and streamed on the city’s YouTube channel.
