HERMISTON – Armand Larive and Sandstone middle school students can dig into the world of broadcasting, thanks to Rob Doherty’s broadcast classes. Recently, three Armand Larive students won honors for their stories from the National Scholastic Press Association’s middle school broadcast competition.
Hermiston School Superintendent Tricia Mooney says the broadcast classes are taught by Doherty at Armand Larive while Andrea Cerrillo is the broadcast teacher at Sandstone Middle School. Mooney said the course is an element of career and technical education that interests the students who are already exposed to making videos, taking pictures, and posting on social media.
“Students learn to develop story concept, conduct interviews, shoot footage, and edit their work into complete narratives,” Doherty said in a news release about the awards.
Mooney said they also come away with more than skills in broadcasting.
“Whether or not any of these students go on to be in broadcasting at some point, that ability to work together and produce something that you can really be proud of – those are life skills,” she said.
