Hermiston man arrested following high-speed chase near Baker City

BAKER CITY – Sixty-year-old Mark Laverne Buckner of Hermiston was arrested by Oregon State Police on multiple charges following a high-speed chase turned foot pursuit near Baker City on Monday evening. Police initially received a report of a reckless driver at around 5:17p.m. on I-84 near milepost 338, just outside of Baker City. A full summary of events, as provided by OSP in a recent press log, is as follows:

“OSP received a report of a reckless driver on I 84 near mile post 338 outside of Baker City, OR. OSP Ontario contacted the complianat who reported the vehicle was driving reckless and almost caused collisions with other vehicles. OSP located the vehicle and observed reckless driving. The driver eluded OSP when attempting to traffic stop the driver. 

The driver fled and lead OSP on a high speed pursuit on 201N back onto 1 84. The driver crashed the vehicle near mile post 351 and foot bailed down into a large creek. A perimeter was setup and OSP cleared the creek and located the suspect covered in mud trying to hide in heavy vegetation. The suspect driver was arrested without further incident and transported to the Malheur County Jail in Vale. The vehicle was towed from the scene.”  

The vehicle used during the chase was a Gray Honda Civic. According to OSP, the vehicle has a different registered owner, who was also listed as a victim in the report. Buckner’s full charges at the time of arrest were:

  • Reckless Driving
  • Attempt to Elude Fleeing (Vehicle)
  • Attempt to Elude Fleeing (Foot)
  • Unauthorized Use of Vehicle (UUMV)
  • Fail to Present Operator’s License.
