HERMISTON – The Hermiston School District Board of Directors has approved a revision to the 2022-23 school calendar that will have elementary school students starting a week later than those in middle and high schools. The big kids go back on Aug. 29 while the young ones start on Sept. 6.
Superintendent Tricia Mooney said teachers at all grade levels will begin working on their classrooms on Aug. 22, but elementary school employees face a new challenge.
“We have two new elementary buildings that are opening and a lot of movement in the school district with staff,” Mooney said. “We want to make sure that those buildings have time to have those buildings up and running.”
Mooney said that since a large number of students will be attending a new school in the coming year, the later start date will allow for some open house activities.
“We plan some targeted open house activities so that our kids and our families can get into all the building, meet the teachers, and get the lay of the land,” Mooney said.
