HERMISTON – The Hermiston School District is offering help to parents signing up children eligible for kindergarten in the coming school year. The registration process is possible to complete online. For parents who have questions, the district office will be open Tuesday, April 23 and Wednesday, April 24 from 4-8 p.m. to help with the process.

Parents will need birth certificates, immunization records, proof of addresses, and email addresses. Superintendent Tricia Mooney says children who turn 5 by Sept. 1 are automatically eligible for kindergarten. Mooney said anticipating the number of kindergarten students is vital to planning for the start of the school year. In addition, it’s a good time to answer questions from parents who either aren’t sure if their children are ready for kindergarten or who feel that in spite of being slightly younger than the cut-off date, they are ready to begin.

She also said there’s another reason that will benefit the rising kindergartners over the summer. Kindergarten Camp will be held in July and enrolled students can register until May 3 for that valuable experience.

“It helps prepare them with things like how to stand in line; how to sit crisscross-applesauce with your hands in your lap; how to hold a pencil; all of those pieces,” Mooney said.
