HERMISTON – Hermiston High School showed an 87.97 percent four-year graduation rate in the 2020-21 school. Year. That came in spite of comprehensive distance learning due to the pandemic. Superintendent Tricia Mooney said the success is due to the hard work of everyone involved.
“I don’t make any magic happen,” Mooney said. “I couldn’t be more proud of our staff, our students who have worked hard during this difficult time, and our families who have provided the support.”
The latest grad rate is 4.23 percent more than the previous school year. Hermiston also saw an improvement in the completer rate with 91.73 percent. That rate includes students who earned an extended diploma or a GED in addition to the students that graduated in four years.
A review of subgroup data shows the district enjoying a 9.83 percent increase in graduation rates for economically disadvantaged students, as well as a 9.57 increase for students of underserved races or ethnicities.
Mooney said the improvement has been a work in progress for many years. “Graduation rates start at kindergarten,” she said. “They started their work 13 years ago in kindergarten and it is the continuous focus of our teachers and I couldn’t be more proud.”
