HERMISTON – The Hermiston City Council has approved establishing the North Hermiston Urban Renewal Area. Assistant City Manager Mark Morgan said the urban renewal funding will help the city make property more attractive for commercial development.

“This is a project which will eventually extend Northeast Aspen Drive to connect up with Highway 395 at the entrance to Home Depot,” Morgan said.

The lack of a connection to the main highway had been a sticking point in the past. “We’ve received a lot of private development on that property over the years, but a lot of the challenge has been connection to Highway 395,” he said. “Doing the urban renewal area provides us the vehicle to upfront finance the construction of transportation improvements through that area so that when development comes along they can have ready access to Highway 395.”
