HERMISTON – The Hermiston City Council is holding a work session at 6 p.m. today (Tuesday). That will be followed by a regular meeting at 7 p.m. Both sessions will be held in council chambers at Hermiston City Hall.

One topic on the agenda for the work session is Recycling Modernization Act which was passed by the Oregon Legislature several years ago. By July 1, 2025, all cities with over 4.000 people are required to begin offering curbside recycling.

“As of now, there are only about five or six cities which meet that threshold and don’t offer curbside recycling; all of which are in eastern Oregon, such as Hermiston, Pendleton, Umatilla, and Boardman,” the staff report on the topic states.

The city of Hermiston is beginning the work to make the RMA a reality.

After the work session, the council will begin a discussion on parade/right of way closures. The staff report said that when the council did major revisions to city ordinances it was realized that more discussion and major work was needed in that area. It’s back up for discussion before the council due to a recent parade request. Staff is acting for advice before they create a new first draft of the ordinance.

Among items being explored are fees, fixed routes, insurance requirements, grandfathering of existing events, method of barricading, and cleanup. The work session and meeting at city hall are also streamed live on the city’s YouTube channel.
