HERMISTON – The Hermiston City Council meets today (Monday) at 7 p.m. One item on the agenda is a resolution that would authorize the installation of two new stop signs and the removal of one stop sign at the intersection of Southeast Ninth Street and East Penney Avenue.

Southeast Ninth was extended about a half mile from its intersection with Penney during the spring, creating a connection to Feedville Road. At the time of the construction a stop sign was installed at the southeast corner of the intersection to stop traffic on Ninth Street.

The proposed changes are the result of requests from drivers in the vicinity as well as anticipated significant changes to traffic volume through the intersection. New stop signs would be placed to stop eastbound and westbound traffic on Penney Avenue while allowing free movement for northbound and southbound traffic.

“City staff anticipates a large private construction project to break ground on the property southwest of this intersection sometime within the next six months,” the staff report states. “The scale of that project is likely to result in upwards of 1,000 construction workers per day accessing the site, along with equipment and material deliveries for 24 to 36 months after construction begins.”

After the building is completed it is anticipated that more than 200 employees will be working at the site. The primary access for the site will be an entrance located on the western end of the new Penney Avenue extension.

The meeting is in council chambers at Hermiston City Hall. It is also streamed live on the city’s YouTube channel.
