HERMISTON – The Hermiston City Council has voted to return the proposed changes for the Hermiston City Charter to staff to provide information about the possibility of establishing term limits. That issue was not addressed by the Hermiston Charter Review Committee.
The council expressed approval of the other elements. They include setting ward boundaries in ordinances to make them easier to change to keep them roughly equal in population. The council also expressed approval of having the four ward city council positions be decided only by the voters of each particular ward instead of by voters from the whole city.
Other changes would selecting a city council president every year instead of every other year; and changing the municipal judge position from elected to appointed. The revisions also include making various language changes and for the charter to be reviewed at least every 10 years.
Once the changes are approved by the council after the report on term limits will be placed on the November ballot for the voters to approve.
