HERMISTON – Before the Hermiston City Council meeting begins at 7 p.m. this evening, the members will hold a tour of the public safety center construction project at 330 S. First Street at 6 p.m. The public safety center houses the Hermiston Police Department and a station for Umatilla County Fire District No. 1.

Upon returning to council chambers in Hermiston City Hall, the council will vote on whether to create Local Improvement District No. 323. That LID would help pay for improvements to Northwest Second Street between West Elm Avenue and West Cherry Avenue. It provides access to three active industrial businesses and two industrial lots which are traditionally used for construction laydown activities.

The Oregon Department of Transportation is scheduled to put in traffic barricades on West Elm Avenue which will eliminate the ability for left-hand turns in and out of Northwest Spruce. City staff says the only remaining access from the northeast onto Elm to the active businesses on Northwest Second Street will be via Northwest Second Street, which is a gravel road.

The city then agreed to help pay for $75,000 of the cost and held a public hearing on the resolution earlier this month.

The public is welcome to attend the meeting at city hall. It will also be streamed live on Hermiston’s YouTube Channel.
