HERMISTON – The Hermiston City Council has given approval of hiring Silver Creek Contracting of Umatilla for the Geer/Harper/North First intersection realignment project. They were the low bidder at a little more than $1 million. The vote was unanimous.

The council also decided tonight (Monday) unanimously to join in a pending class-action production liability litigation against per- and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) manufacturers and related industry.

PFAS are a large group of synthetic chemicals that have been used for decades in industrial processes and consumer products because they resist heat, oil, and water. They have been commonly used in non-stick cookware, wrappers, and firefighting foam. They are often called ‘forever chemicals.’ PFAS have been detected in many public drinking water systems across the United States.

The council also voted 6 to 1 to set a public hearing for May 11 on the suggestion of a name change for East Airport Road. Several residents spoke in opposition to the renaming. All of the residents will be notified of the hearing date.
