HERMISTON – The city of Hermiston and the Hermiston Downtown District are seeking local artists to showcase what makes life sweet in Hermiston. The 2023 Downtown Banner Contest is now underway and the deadline for submitting is April 24.
There are two categories, and a winner will come from each. The first is students in grades K-12 and the second is adults 19 and older. In addition to having their banners displayed throughout downtown Hermiston for a year, the winners will receive $100 each.
“We’re looking for artwork that shows the history, culture, community activities, and natural beauty that makes life sweet in Hermiston and gives a strong sense of place downtown,” Assistant City Manager Mark Morgan said.
He also said that he expects that Hermiston’s famous watermelon will figure in the banner designs.
“If I was seeding various fruits and vegetables, I would probably have the watermelon as the number one seed,” he said. “Potatoes and onions would be more like a 13- or 14-seed.”
