JOHN DAY – January was Mental Wellness Month. Representatives from Heart of Grant County were in the Elkhorn Media Group studios recently to discuss mental wellbeing. Director Beth Simonsen said identifying what makes you happy is important when battling things like depression:

“To me, becoming more self aware—what helps you get out of your funk? Is it listening to music? Going for a drive? Having a pet to pet?”

Simonsen said while many of their clients have undergone abuse and/or trauma, mental wellness is equally important among the support staff:

“We work on mental wellness ourselves all the time. Because, one, we need to take care of ourselves; and two, we need to be available for the people that we help.”
