Hearing is planned on bill regarding missing and murdered indigenous people

SALEM โ€“ House Bill 3198 will have a public hearing before the Oregon House of Representatives this afternoon. The bill requires the Oregon Department of Justice to study missing and murdered indigenous people. It is sponsored by Rep. Tawna Sanchez (D-Portland).

If passed, it would order the DOJ to study such cases and submit its findings to the Oregon Legislature no later than Sept. 15, 2026. The bill would then sunset on Jan. 2, 2027. The proposed measure was filed before the Legislature began its 2025 session. The hearing on this particular measure will begin after 3:05 p.m.
