Harney County Lincoln School Cleanup Project

By on Wednesday, May 15th, 2024 in Eastern/Southeast Oregon Top Stories

HARNEY COUNTY-Harney County was awarded a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Brownfield Cleanup Grant (CA# 4B-02J52001) in November 2023. The County will be using funds from this grant to remove hazardous building materials and an aboveground heating oil tank from the former Lincoln School property. The site will be redeveloped into the Harney County Justice Center.

The goals of this project are to revitalize the property into productive reuse; prevent potential risks to site workers, the community and environment; and stimulate economic development. As part of the planning execution of this cleanup project, the County wants to keep the community informed of this project’s progress.

The County invites you to join them at this community meeting for an opportunity to learn more about the project, ask questions, and share potential concerns.

During the meeting they will be discussing:

  • Overview of the cleanup project
  • Project plan and timeline
  • What to expect to see and hear at the project site
  • Goals of the project in relation to public health, the community, and the environment
  • Community questions and concerns
  • How to stay informed
  • Proposed plans for future redevelopment
  • Opportunities for future engagement
  • Update on the EPA Brownfields Assessment Grant

The Community Meeting will be held Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at 5:00pm at the Harney County Chamber of Commerce Community Meeting Room located at 484 N. Broadway Ave, Burns, Or 97720.
