Harney County Fair Board Chair talks fair date change

HARNEY COUNTY-Exciting updates are on the horizon for the Harney County Fairgrounds. In a recent appearance on Harney County Live, Harney County Fair Board Chair Craig Neher shared major announcements regarding the future scheduling of the annual fair, the status of the highly anticipated new Event Center, and a new avenues for community support.

Here are the key takeaways from Neher’s broadcast update:

In a significant logistical update, Neher announced that the annual Harney County Fair will be moving its traditional dates on the calendar. This change is scheduled to take effect beginning in 2028.

While the fair will maintain its current scheduling format for the next couple of years, the 2028 shift is being planned well in advance to give local families, vendors, agricultural exhibitors, and 4-H participants ample time to adjust their schedules.

Fairgoers won’t have to wait years for the next big milestone, however. Neher delivered an exciting construction update, confirming that the fairgrounds’ brand-new Event Center is on track to be utilized during this year’s upcoming fair.

The large-scale project—envisioned as a versatile multi-use steel building—has been a major focus for the Fair Board. Getting the facility operational for the current fair cycle marks a massive win for the community, providing a much-needed modern indoor space for livestock shows, community gatherings, and local exhibitions.

Looking toward long-term sustainability, Neher also highlighted the official formation of the Harney County Fair Foundation.

Operating as a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the foundation opens up new doors for community investment. Because of its tax-exempt non-profit status, individuals, local businesses, and agricultural sponsors can now make tax-deductible donations directly to the foundation. These funds will be strictly used to support the preservation, upkeep, and future development of the historic fairgrounds.
