BURNS (Released by the Harney County Fair Board)-The Harney County Fair Board is pleased to announce that beginning in 2028, the Harney County Fair will move to new dates, with the fair scheduled for August 17–20, 2028, immediately following the Grant County Fair.
This change comes after years of discussion, evaluation, and community input. The decision was made with the goal of better serving local youth, families, exhibitors, and fair participants. Community support for the change was evident through a survey conducted nearly two years ago, which showed strong interest in exploring alternative fair dates.
Several factors contributed to the Board’s decision to move the fair earlier in August, including:
The Fair Board recognizes that changing a long-standing tradition comes with concerns and challenges. After careful consideration and extensive discussion, the Board believes this move will strengthen the fair’s future and create additional opportunities for participation across the community.
The Fair Board is also excited to announce that horse racing will be returning to Harney County.
Originally planned for 2027, the return of racing was delayed due to budgeting constraints at the Oregon Racing Commission. As a result, the Fair Board is now planning a standalone horse racing event during the third week of July 2028. Additional details will be announced as planning progresses.
There will be significant activity underway at the Harney County Fairgrounds Event Center soon. With additional grant funding secured, work is moving forward once again on the completion of the newly constructed event center.
Current priorities include the installation of doors and electrical infrastructure to secure and fully utilize the facility. As additional funding opportunities are secured, contractors will return to continue construction and complete remaining phases of the project.
Support from the County will be crucial for completion, as well as continued private party contributions. The Event Center serves as an asset to generate income for our economically struggling community.
To further support improvements at the fairgrounds, a new nonprofit organization, the Harney County Fair Foundation, has been established as a 501(c)(3) organization.
The foundation’s mission is to pursue grant opportunities, fundraising efforts, and partnerships that will enhance and improve the Harney County Fairgrounds for future generations.
The Harney County Fair Board would also like to thank Fairgrounds Manager Lindsey Robertson for her service and dedication to the Harney County Fair and Fairgrounds. The Board wishes Lindsey the very best in her future endeavors and appreciates the contributions she has made to the success of the fair and the community.
The Board looks forward to working with Harney County leadership as the search begins for a new Fairgrounds Manager. While the position presents unique challenges, it also offers a tremendous opportunity to help guide the future of one of Harney County’s most valued community assets.
The Harney County Fair Board remains committed to providing quality events, supporting youth and agriculture, and continuing improvements that will benefit the entire community for years to come.
