BURNS (Released by the Harney County Courthouse)-To continue promoting a safe, welcoming, and secure environment for everyone who enters the courthouse, the Harney County Courthouse will begin using a walkthrough metal detector and Xray screening at the public (front/east) entrance. All other entrances will remain locked, with the back (west) entrance equipped with ADA accommodations for those who need them.
This entrance screen process aligns the Harney County Courthouse with safety practices used in most courthouses across Oregon. Harney County has been one of the last in the state without security screening, and implementing this step strengthens our commitment to providing a safe and respectful environment for the public, courthouse staff, jurors and justice partners.
We recognize that this change may add a small amount of inconvenience, and we sincerely appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation as these protections and put in place.
State law makes it a serious crime to bring firearms or weapons into a courthouse. Presiding Judge Order restricts other prohibited items. These restrictions apply to all visitors, including individuals with valid concealed handgun licenses.
Visitors are encouraged to allow a few extra minutes when arriving for court proceedings or appointments. Court security staff will be available to help guide visitors through the screening process and answer any questions.
Our goal is simple: to foster a courthouse where everyone feels safe. We are grateful for the community’s understanding as we take this important step toward strengthening safety for all.
